Scozia, anni 20. L’adolescente Francis Chisholm (McDowall), dopo essere rimasto orfano e aver perso la ragazza, che ama (morta dando alla luce il figlio illegittimo di un altro), si fa prete (Peck) ma le sue prime esperienze sono fallimentari. La sua esistenza cambia solo quando accetta una missione in Cina, dove scopre il vero senso della vita: aiutare i miseri e i poveri.
